Ko Chuan Huang 黃歌川
An Transdisciplinarity and Fusion Forerunner
Taiwan’s post-war forerunner artists-Ko Chuan Huang (1919-2010) was born in Fujian and settled in Taiwan for over 60 years. Specializing in watercolor painting, ink wash painting, Batik, oil painting and mixed media.
In the 1950s, Huang took part in the Taiwan Modern Painting Movement and established the Graphic Art Society of the Republic of China, the Art Society of the Republic of China, along with Chu Teh-Chun, Yang Yu-yu, and Chen Ting-Shih . Such are Huang’s contributions to setting the foundation for Taiwan’s art development today.
Huang is listed in books on Taiwan’s post-war art development compiled by the Ministry of Culture, as well as biographies of people from the early Republic published by Academia Historica. Huang’s artworks were selected for numerous solo exhibitions and domestic / international joint exhibitions e.g. Bienal de São Paulo in Brazil, which is one of the world’s top 3 art exhibitions.
As art has developed into an era of diversification and trans-disciplinary creations, Ko Chuan Huang with his life-long commitment to art innovation started his path as an artist 60 years ago. Seventy years on, his artistic career has successfully crossed to Ancient Batik Craft and Modern Painting and Zen Culture and Contemporary Art; fusing Oriental Aesthetics and Western Mixed Media and Oriental Ink and Western Oil Painting. As a result, Huang created four major new genres in painting: “Ice-Crack Batik Painting”, “Dharma Zen Painting”, “Multimedia Modern Painting” and “Oil-Based Chinese Ink Painting”. Huang is regarded as a pioneer of transdisciplinarity and fusion art in Taiwan.
National Museum of History (NMH) hold a collection of 101 Huang’s works, and further attests to the permanent collection value of his paintings.

跨域融合的先鋒
台灣畫壇國寶級藝術家黃歌川(1919~2010)，醉心藝術創作七十寒暑，漫畫、木刻、攝影、水彩畫、水墨畫、冰裂紋蠟染畫、油畫、多媒材、以及宗教為主題之禪畫，應有盡有，無所不畫、無一不精，是全方位知名藝術家。其名列入文化部出版的戰後台灣美術史書，以及國史館民國人物傳記史料之中。
上世紀50年代，黃歌川參與台灣現代繪畫運動，與朱德群、楊英風、陳庭詩等人，分別創立「中華民國畫學會」、「中華民國版畫學會」等，為今日台灣藝術發展奠定基業做出貢獻。
黃歌川其名列入文化部戰後台灣美術叢書，以及國史館民國人物傳記之中。作品入選世界三大藝術展之一的巴西聖保羅國際雙年展等、歷屆全國美展（免審查資格）等國內外聯展與個展無數。
當今藝術發展進入跨域與多元化創作的時代，黃歌川畢身為追求藝術革新，一甲子前，開始落實其創作。七十年來的藝術生涯，成功跨域了「古老蠟染工藝與現代繪畫」、「禪文化與當代藝術」，融合了「東方美學與西方複合媒材」、「東方水墨與西方油彩」，創造出四大繪畫新語─「冰裂紋蠟染畫」、「達摩禪畫」、「多媒材畫」與「國畫(水墨畫)油彩化」，堪稱是臺灣藝術界跨域融合的先鋒，國立歷史博物館肯定其藝術價值，典藏101件作品。
